“Clear Out of the City” – Another Threat

Once again the Women’s Popular Organization (Oganización Feminina Popular) of Barrancabermeja is facing death threats. The threats are implied to come from the illegal armed groups (the former paramilitaries) who control the city. On Thursday September 13 at 10 pm, Gloria Amparo Suarez received a call saying, “Hello m*****f******* bitch, keep holding your meetings and stirring up all the old ladies with the little story that they are victims and you’ll see what will happen to you. Do not think that we have forgotten about you. Tell her boss Yolanda, as well. We’re giving you 72 hours to clear out of the city”. Despite the threats, Gloria has not left Barrancabermeja, and continues her work here, although she is very concerned that the paramilitaries will follow through on their threat.

In the past month the Women’s Popular Organization has been engaged in preparing for a series of regional “courts”, with a goal of collecting testimony and documenting abuses by armed actors, both legal and illegal. They have held a number of meetings with institutions such as Acción Social (the government agency charged with supporting victims conflict), with the coordinator of the Victims Unit, with the municipal housing coordination, with women in at-risk areas of the city, and with community councils.

“This situation is very difficult, because it makes us relive everything that has occurred. We remember when Gloria and Yolanda were threatened in the past; today their families are in a panic.”

We ask that civil authorities, the police and the military that investigate these acts in order to identify, capture, and bring to justice the illegal armed groups that are bringing fear and death in the city and the region.

We are calling on our supporters from the international community to urge the Government to ensure the civil rights of civilians and especially women to organize politically and work for peace, in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 1325, which the Colombian government has ratified.

  1. Horrible news, and so proud of Gloria. I’m speaking tonight about the OFP and will tell a group of folks in Seattle about this threat. Could CPT-Colombia put together a sample letter “to urge the Government to ensure the civil rights of civilians and especially women to organize,” as the OFP calls for? I would like to send something but don’t know who to write to in the Colombian government.
    In solidarity.
