Labor Day Demonstration in Segovia

The organization Corporation for Coexistence and Peace in Northeast of Antioquia (Cahucopana) organized a demonstration for the International Workers’ Day, May 1, 2011 in Segovia, Antioquia. Founded in 2004, Cahucopana is an organization of small farmers. They recognize the need to unify themselves to ensure the respect for their human rights.

CPT took part of the demonstration and is planning an international delegation with Cahucopana in July of this year.

During the speech at Segovia’s central park, the police were filming the event from the police station’s roof. CPT and IAP (International Action for Peace) shared their concerns with the officers, but they kept on filming.

On the same night, recognized paramilitaries entered the place where the demonstrators were sleeping, generating fear.

Colombian National Police filming the event of the May 1st.

The following is part of the main speech at the event.

The situation of rural workers is particularly serious. Firstly, farmers have been the main victims of the armed conflict in our country and secondly, they suffer more rigorously from the effects of the implementation of the neoliberal economic model.

Recent trade agreements and the adoption of the new National Development Plan only arouse the damaging effects of this exclusionary economic model because it will only benefit a small sector of society while detrimenting the rights of the majority at the expense of their own subsistence.

That is why we demand the search for peace with social justice. We have been demanding: Restate to recover it’s social character, reduce military spending to a minimum, stop the implementation of mining and agricultural megaprojects, promote the rational excavating of our resources, respect the rural economies, guarantee the right to union organize, bring to an end to job insecurity, and direct social investment to benefit the poorest.

Ensure the access and protection of land rights and environmental protection of territory.

Ensure the return of the rural population affected by the conflict and displacement, creating the cultural, social, environmental and economic to remain in their territory, with the criteria of solidarity and cooperation among its people with respect for life, traditions and safety.

The state must guarantee the protection of water in all its manifestations, as essential to the life of all species in this and future generation. Water must be recognized as a human right.

The design and implementation of a national public policy for human rights and International Humanitarian Law must be developed with the active participation of communities and social sectors that respond to their particular realities.

Strengthen the construction of the social, cultural, and community organizations, that work to enroll the recovery of the economic system of rural community.

Ensure the necessary guarantees for human rights defenders and social leaders, unions, students and small farmers.

Finally, we reaffirm our will to organize, mobilize and struggle towards making these demands a reality.
